The Council owns Townend Farm- it can choose NOT to develop it - Councillor Craig Gamble Pugh
“I believe that our Local Plan should be based on the principle of ‘Brownfield First’- and I fought for years to have all our S35 greenbelt sites kept out of the 2023 plan.”
Townend Farm- the rolling fields between The Wheel and Yew Lane- was part of South Wortley Rural District Council.
When South Wortley became part of Sheffield in 1977, part of the agreement was that Sheffield  Council bought Townend Farm in order to ensure that it could not be developed.
“I’m calling for the council to continue to protect this land, and maintain the principle of Brownfield First. Most of the land in the Local Plan is owned privately- but because the Council owns Townend Farm, they can choose NOT to sell it or develop it.
Please sign my petition and help protect Townend Farm.”
We the undersigned,
– Note that many local people strongly believe that Townend Farm should be removed from the local plan
– Understand that the Planning Inspectorate may decide, despite our objections, to leave it in the plan.
Therefore we call on the council
  • Not to develop, or sell for development, the Townend Farm land, instead prioritising development of Sheffield’s proposed 30,000+ homes designated for Brownfield land. The council should not consider using Townend Farm unless a significant proportion of these Brownfield sites are  exhausted, which we believe is unlikely to happen

  • To work with government to develop greater powers for councils to decline planning on greenbelt while significant Brownfield sites remain
