Craig Gamble Pugh- East Ecclesfield Councillor
Residents beware- check your rights before parting with your cash Craig Gamble Pugh
A number of residents got in touch recently, concerned to have had a letter from the Compton Group, the company who own the freehold on many properties in our area. These letters are, wrongly, telling householders that they have to buy expensive insurance specified by them, pay large sums to buy the freehold from them, or threaten charges and fees. Of course, these letters are causing great concern.
Companies including the Compton Group have bought up the freeholds on huge numbers of estates built in the 60s, 70 and 80s. You do NOT need to buy their chosen insurance. You do not have to buy the freehold, and they are usually not able to charge fees unless these are specified in your lease.
On behalf of residents, I have discussed these concerns with MP’s and councillors in our Labour Team. I have set up a petition to put pressure on key decision makers to increase regulation on this.
Please can you fill in the petition? It may be that you yourself have had one of these threatening letters, but even if not, it could be an elderly neighbour who is being affected.
If we can demonstrate public support, hopefully together we can get some action on this issue
End the Ground Rent Rip Off!
